The Department of Electricity and Energy (DEE) was established on 01 April 2025, to address South Africa’s energy challenges and provide dedicated oversight and coordination of overseeing electricity and energy security. The administration and powers of electricity and energy-related legislation were transferred to the newly formed Department of Electricity and Energy, through Proclamation No 179 of 2024 published in the (Government Gazette No. 51140 on 30 August 2024).
The department is the central authority for electricity and energy security planning, regulatory oversight, policy coordination, ensuring an integrated approach across the electricity, generation, transmission, and distribution value chain.
